Halloween: The Game Challenges Guide: Story, Passive & Progressive

Halloween: The Game has three major challenge families: automatically tracked Passive Challenges, character/skin/weapon-specific Progressive Challenges, and optional Story Mode Challenges across all six chapters. Patch 1.0.2 fixed many tracking blockers, but some objectives remain unclear or still generate player reports.

Quick Answer

Challenges are separate from normal XP progression. IllFonic divides them into Passive, Progressive and Singleplayer Story Mode Challenges. Passive Challenges track broad Killer or Civilian actions automatically. Progressive Challenges are tied to a specific Civilian, Michael skin or weapon and are completed in sequence. Story Mode Challenges are optional objectives spread across all six chapters and unlock cosmetic rewards.

Patch 1.0.2 repaired many launch-week tracking problems, including Resident escorts, match survival, multiple named Passive/Progressive objectives and several Story Mode challenges. The same patch notes also say some challenge wording is still unclear, so a challenge that appears stuck is not automatically proof that you are doing the wrong mechanic.

This page owns general challenge structure and challenge-not-tracking troubleshooting. Prestige Challenges are covered separately in the Prestige Guide.

Challenge Types

The official progression overview separates the challenge system into three groups:

TypeHow it worksWhat it is tied to
PassiveTracks automatically while you playKiller or Civilian role categories
ProgressiveObjectives completed in sequenceSpecific Civilian, Michael skin or weapon
Story ModeOptional objectives inside the campaignPrologue + six playable chapters / story progression

The important SEO and gameplay distinction is that Prestige Challenges are not the same thing as these normal Challenge tracks. Reaching a progression cap can surface a Prestige Challenge, but the prestige flow, retry state and prestige-specific bugs belong to the Prestige system.

Story Mode Challenges

Officially, every playable story chapter has optional challenges. Completing them can unlock alternate outfits and other cosmetics, and IllFonic says completing the full singleplayer challenge set leads to a special legendary cosmetic reward.

Launch-week players reported many cases where a Story objective appeared completed but the check mark did not register. Patch 1.0.2 specifically fixed:

Community walkthroughs also show that some objectives are extremely strict about detection, restarting and exact action order. Those reports can be useful, but they are not a substitute for the current official objective text. If a guide from Early Access contradicts the current build, trust the live challenge description and latest patch notes first.

Passive Challenges

Passive Challenges are the broadest category. The official progression page says they are divided across Killer and Civilian categories and track regardless of which character you select.

That makes them different from Progressive Challenges. If a challenge is truly Passive, switching between eligible Civilians should not by itself erase the category’s tracked progress.

Patch 1.0.2 fixed several Passive-style blockers, including challenges that required escorting Residents to an escape, surviving a match and the Killer Passive Challenge Weight of the Mask.

If a Passive challenge is not moving, first verify that the action really belongs to the Passive category and that the match completed normally. Do not assume a character-specific Progressive objective will behave like a Passive one.

Progressive Challenges

Progressive Challenges are narrower. IllFonic says they are tied to specific Civilian characters, Michael skins and weapon types, and players work through them in succession to unlock rewards.

That means the exact loadout matters. A weapon challenge may require the named weapon rather than any Michael kill, and a Civilian Progressive Challenge may only track while playing the associated character.

Patch 1.0.2 named several fixes:

When a Progressive objective stays at 0, check the required character/skin/weapon first. If the wording is ambiguous, preserve a screenshot of the exact challenge text before testing alternatives; this is much more useful for support than a generic “challenge is broken” report.

What Patch 1.0.2 Changed

The September 11 update is the current named baseline for this page. IllFonic said it corrected progression blockers across Passive, Progressive and Singleplayer challenges and made Story Mode completion more consistent.

The developer also explicitly acknowledged that some challenge objectives remain unclear, even where they are technically completable. That matters because there are two different failure modes:

  1. the game is not tracking an otherwise valid action;
  2. the objective wording does not clearly communicate the exact condition.

Do not treat those as the same problem. Tracking failures need a patch or server/client fix; unclear wording needs interpretation or better in-game messaging.

Challenge Not Tracking: What to Try

If a normal Challenge is not progressing in the current build, use this order:

  1. Confirm the category. Passive, Progressive, Story and Prestige do not use identical rules.
  2. Confirm the required character, skin or weapon. Progressive objectives are specific by design.
  3. Restart the game after the latest hotfix. IllFonic specifically asked players to restart when challenge/prestige criteria were corrected server-side on September 11.
  4. Finish the match or chapter cleanly when possible. Some community reports suggest progress can post late or behave differently after restarts, although this is not an official universal rule.
  5. Check the current patch notes before following an old workaround. Several launch-week bugs were already changed in 1.0.2.
  6. Capture the exact objective and progress counter. If it is still stuck, submit the challenge name, platform and reproduction steps to support.

For a Prestige Challenge specifically, use the Prestige Guide instead; weapon/profile prestige tracking has its own current issues.

FAQ

What is the difference between Passive and Progressive Challenges?

Passive Challenges track role-wide categories automatically. Progressive Challenges are tied to a specific Civilian, Michael skin or weapon and are completed in sequence.

How many Story Mode chapters have challenges?

The official progression overview says optional challenges exist across all six playable story chapters.

Did Patch 1.0.2 fix every challenge bug?

No such guarantee was published. It fixed many named blockers, while IllFonic also said some objectives still have unclear descriptions and that the team would keep monitoring challenge problems.

Why did my challenge complete but not show a check mark?

That was a common launch-week report. Update to the current build, restart the game, and verify whether the reward/progress posts after the chapter or match. If it remains stuck, record the exact challenge name and platform.

Are Prestige Challenges covered here?

Only as a pointer. The prestige flow, weapon/profile prestige problems and retry state are covered in the Prestige Guide.
