Halloween: The Game Weapons & Loadout Guide
The best weapon depends on the job: heavy melee creates high-impact openings, fast weapons reduce commitment, firearms trade scarcity for range, and Pocket Knives or Icepicks are survival resources rather than ordinary duel tools.

Quick Answer
Current player testing tends to favor heavy axes and pickaxes when a Civilian needs maximum melee impact, while faster blades are easier to commit with and leave. The correct choice still depends on your character, perk deck, objective and whether Michael is already gaining Bloodthirst.
For Michael, community rankings do not agree on one permanent winner. Wood Axe and Pickaxe are common heavy-damage recommendations; Kitchen Knife and Hatchet favor quicker, more flexible pressure; Pitchfork is valued by some players for reach. Treat those as playstyle choices until IllFonic publishes a complete versioned weapon-stat table.
Do not carry a weapon just to hunt Michael. A hit is valuable when it protects a resident, breaks a grab or opens a route to an escape. For build support, see Best Perks & Civilian Builds.

Civilian Weapon Roles
| Role | Typical examples | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy melee | Fire / wood-style axes, Pickaxe | High-impact rescue, stagger pressure, breaking some blockers | Slow commitment and close range |
| Fast melee | Knives, Cleaver and other short blades | Quick interruption, lower commitment | Less reach and usually less single-hit impact |
| Firearms | Guns found during a match | Ranged pressure and safer interruption | Ammo, accuracy, availability and character fit |
| Throwables / household tools | Map pickups that can be thrown or swung | Buying a moment to disengage | Inconsistent availability and limited follow-up |
| Grab-escape items | Pocket Knife, Icepick | Escaping a grab at a decisive moment | Scarce after 1.0.2; wasteful as routine combat loot |
The community commonly values Pickaxe and axe-family weapons for raw impact, but raw damage is not the whole decision. A slow heavy swing that misses can give Michael a free hit; a fast interruption that lets two residents reach an escape may be more valuable than a higher-damage trade.
Because current damage numbers come from player testing rather than an official table, this guide deliberately avoids presenting exact values as fixed facts.
Pocket Knives and Icepicks
Patch 1.0.2 reduced Grab Escape Item spawns across all maps. IllFonic specifically used Pocket Knives as the example and explained that these items should create rare clutch survival moments.
That changes their value:
- keep one for a likely high-value escort or item carrier,
- do not assume every teammate can escape a grab,
- avoid spending a scarce escape item on a fight with no objective value,
- use Slippery or broader survival perks when your build cannot depend on finding one.
The Escape Locations guide covers route search and item requirements. It does not promise a fixed weapon or escape-item spawn because the active routes and item economy can change.
Michael Starting Weapons
The official progression overview confirms that Michael can unlock and select new starting weapons, weapon tints and executions. It does not publish a complete damage/reach/speed table, so community rankings should be read as testing, not official balance documentation.
Use the tradeoff you can actually execute:
- Wood Axe / Pickaxe: choose heavy pressure when you can predict movement and accept slower attacks.
- Kitchen Knife: choose familiar, flexible close-range pressure with less commitment.
- Hatchet: useful if you value flexible handling and the weapon’s available interactions over maximum heavy-hit claims.
- Pitchfork: consider it for spacing and reach; current community opinions are still forming.
At high Bloodthirst, Michael’s melee damage and other stats increase. That means a weapon can feel very different late in a match from its opening state. Use the Michael Myers guide for the full Bloodthirst and pressure plan.
Practical Loadout Choices
Civilian objective runner
Carry an escape / repair item when the route needs it; treat a weapon as secondary insurance. Favor a quick disengagement tool and stamina / information perks over a heavy combat setup.
Civilian rescue player
Take the highest-impact weapon you can reliably land, then add Solid Foundation, Contender or recovery support. Strike to create space, free a teammate or finish an escort—not to remain beside Michael after the opening exists.
Michael general-purpose loadout
Choose a weapon whose timing you know, then use Reality Tear + Detection Pulse + Evil Presence as a flexible ability package when available. If you are still learning routes, Detection Pulse is often more useful than a theoretically stronger tool you cannot convert into pressure.
Michael chase-pressure loadout
Pair a faster weapon with Reality Tear + Evil Presence + Shadow Strike if you value frequent chase interaction. Community sources disagree on Shadow Strike’s exact tier, so test whether you convert its openings before treating it as mandatory.
Patch and Roadmap Context
Patch 1.0.2 reduced grab-escape item spawns and increased Michael’s base and early Bloodthirst damage resistance. On September 17, IllFonic also said it was preparing changes to melee damage, Civilian stagger states and combo speed for weapons such as the Wood Axe.
That announced tuning is not live data until the corresponding patch ships. It does mean weapon rankings are especially volatile, so check the 2026 Current Status guide before relying on an older tier list.
FAQ
What is the best Civilian weapon?
Pickaxes and heavy axes are common current recommendations for impact, but they are slow and risky. The best practical weapon is the one that creates an objective-saving opening without trapping you in a long fight.
What is Michael’s best starting weapon?
There is no stable official winner. Wood Axe and Pickaxe are common heavy choices, Kitchen Knife and Hatchet are more flexible, and some players prefer Pitchfork reach.
Are Pocket Knives weapons?
Treat them primarily as grab-escape resources. Patch 1.0.2 reduced their map spawns, making careless use more expensive.
Are community damage numbers exact?
They are player-tested and may be useful, but IllFonic has not published the complete versioned table used by this guide. Patches can change damage, stagger and combo timing.
